Girls Brigade talk on Culture
The local Girls Brigade leader, Leona, asked me to run a session on “Culture”. Girls Brigade re-started in Telefomin last year after the Girls Brigade Commissioner for PNG, who is originally from this area and now lives in Port Moresby, asked her Telefomin friends to consider the benefits which they received, from the Girls Brigade, when they were young.
The new Girls Brigade group meets in our local Church building on a Friday afternoon. They don’t have craft resources or instruments or even power for lights, but the girls come along every week.
For my session on culture, I made a colouring page with a Bible verse for the younger girls, and gave them crayons and felt tip pens whilst I targeted my talk at the older girls. I encouraged them to challenge negative accepted culture, just like Jesus did when he spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well. I showed them a couple of videos I’d downloaded off YouTube, but I only had my laptop screen for about 60 girls to crowd around due to the lack of power.
Before I finished my session, I prayed for the girls, I prayed that God would bless their futures, protect them and help them in their studies. It was such a privilege to be able to pray for them.
Singing along with the actions to “Father Abraham”. I remember singing that song when I was in the Girl Guides!
Standing at the front of the Church building with my laptop on the table. The Church does have a generator to operate the sound system and lights, but this is only used for the songs on a Sunday morning as Diesel is very expensive, at around K30 per litre (CAD10 / GBP5.30).
We ended up with a large group of around 60 girls between the ages of 6 - 16. I didn’t expect such a large group.
